For the Onion Rings

For the Dipping Sauce (optional)

Method

Prepare the Onion Rings

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Whisk together until well mixed.

  3. 3

    Add Buttermilk

Pour the buttermilk into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick enough to adhere to the onion rings.

Fry the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring they are well coated. Allow excess batter to drip off.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Make the Dipping Sauce

  1. 7

    Combine Ingredients

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, hot sauce, and lemon juice. Mix until smooth and well combined.
