Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, beat 1 large egg and then add 3/4 cup of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly until smooth.

  3. 3

    Form the Dough

Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the right consistency.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, add 4 cups of vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil; it should sizzle immediately.

  2. 5

    Shape the Dough

Take small portions of the dough and flatten them slightly with your hands to form discs, about 1/4 inch thick.

  3. 6

    Fry the Dough

Carefully place the shaped dough into the hot oil, frying a few at a time to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

  4. 7

    Drain and Dust

Remove the fried dough from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While still warm, dust generously with 1 cup of powdered sugar.
