Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the russet potatoes and shred them using a box grater or a food processor. You should have about 2 cups of shredded potatoes.

  2. 2

    Remove Excess Moisture

Place the shredded potatoes in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. This step is crucial for achieving crispy hash browns.

  3. 3

    Season the Potatoes

In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded potatoes with salt, black pepper, and any optional ingredients you are using (onion, garlic powder, paprika). Mix well to ensure even seasoning.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Heat the Pan

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium-high heat until hot and shimmering.

  2. 5

    Cook the Hash Browns

Add the seasoned shredded potatoes to the skillet in an even layer. Press them down lightly with a spatula. Cook for about 5-7 minutes without stirring, until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.

  3. 6

    Flip and Finish Cooking

Using a large spatula, carefully flip the hash browns in sections. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the other side is also golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Serve

Remove the hash browns from the skillet and drain on paper towels if necessary. Serve immediately as a delicious side dish.
