Method
Preparing the Dough
- 1
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well blended.
- 2
- 3
Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
- 4
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead for about 1-2 minutes until the dough is smooth.
- 5
Rest the Dough
Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
Frying the Dough
- 6
Heat the Oil
In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 7
Shape the Dough
Take small portions of the rested dough and roll them out into circles about 1/4 inch thick. You can also stretch them by hand for a more rustic shape.
- 8
Fry the Dough
Carefully place the shaped dough into the hot oil, frying for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
- 9
Drain Excess Oil
Once fried, remove the dough from the oil and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- 10
Dust with Powdered Sugar
While still warm, generously dust the fried dough with powdered sugar before serving.
