Method

Beef Patty Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Patty

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Shape the mixture into a patty approximately 1/2 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center to prevent it from puffing up while cooking.

Fried Onions Preparation

  1. 3

    Prepare the Onions

Peel and slice the onion into thin rings.

  2. 4

    Dredge the Onions

Place the sliced onions in a bowl and sprinkle with flour and salt. Toss to coat evenly.

  3. 5

    Fry the Onions

In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the coated onions in batches and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-5 minutes. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Cooking the Patty

  1. 6

    Cook the Patty

In the same skillet used for the onions, lower the heat to medium and add the beef patty. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes until desired doneness is reached.

  2. 7

    Add Cheese

In the last minute of cooking, place two slices of cheddar cheese on top of the patty and cover the skillet with a lid to melt the cheese.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 8

    Toast the Bread

In a separate skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place the rye bread slices in the skillet and toast until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  2. 9

    Assemble the Sandwich

On one slice of toasted rye bread, place the cooked beef patty with melted cheese, followed by a generous amount of fried onions. Top with the second slice of rye bread.

  3. 10

    Final Toast

In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and toast the assembled sandwich on both sides until golden brown and heated through, about 2-3 minutes per side.
