Form the Patty
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat. Form the mixture into a round patty approximately 1/3 lb in weight and about 3/4 inch thick.

Cook the Patty
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the patty in the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until a meat thermometer reads 160°F (70°C) for a medium doneness. Remove from heat and set aside.

Slice the Onion
Peel and slice the medium onion into thin rings.

Fry the Onions
In a frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the coated onions and fry until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

Remove the sandwich from the skillet, slice in half, and serve warm.
