Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare Walnut Mixture

In a food processor, combine walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon. Pulse until the mixture is coarsely ground. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  3. 3

    Layer Phyllo Dough

Unroll phyllo dough and cover with a damp towel to prevent drying out. In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, place one sheet of phyllo dough, brush with melted butter, and repeat for 8 sheets.

  4. 4

    Add Walnut Filling

Evenly spread half of the walnut mixture over the layered phyllo. Top with 4 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with melted butter.

  5. 5

    Repeat Layers

Spread the remaining walnut mixture, followed by 8 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

  6. 6

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.

  7. 7

    Prepare Syrup

While baklava is baking, combine water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

  8. 8

    Soak Baklava

Once baklava is done baking, immediately pour the hot syrup over it and let it soak for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.
