Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Syrup

In a medium saucepan, combine the honey, water, sugar, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Nut Filling

In a bowl, mix the chopped pistachios with ground cinnamon. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Layer the Phyllo Dough

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the butter and brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with some melted butter. Lay down one sheet of phyllo dough and brush with butter. Repeat this process, layering about 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

  4. 4

    Add the Nut Filling

Sprinkle a thin layer of the pistachio mixture over the phyllo. Continue layering phyllo (about 4 sheets), brushing with butter between each layer, and then add more pistachio filling. Repeat this process until all the pistachios are used, finishing with about 8 layers of phyllo on top.

  5. 5

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-50 minutes, or until golden and crisp.

  6. 6

    Add Syrup

Once baked, remove baklava from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava. Allow it to absorb the syrup for at least 4 hours (or overnight) before serving.
