Prepare the Batter
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Gradually add the beer, mixing until smooth. Let the batter rest for about 15 minutes.

Heat the Oil
In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

Batter the Haddock
Dip each haddock fillet into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated.

Fry the Fish
Carefully place the battered haddock fillets in the hot oil. Fry for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Assemble the Sandwich
On the bottom half of each potato roll, place a lettuce leaf, followed by a fried haddock fillet, a slice of American cheese, a slice of tomato, and a generous dollop of tartar sauce. Top with the other half of the roll.
