Method

Steak Preparation

  1. 1

    Season the Steak

Sprinkle both sides of the beef cube steak with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

  2. 2

    Coat in Buttermilk

Pour the buttermilk into a shallow bowl. Dip each seasoned steak into the buttermilk, ensuring it is well coated.

  3. 3

    Dredge in Flour

In another shallow bowl, place the all-purpose flour. Dredge the buttermilk-coated steak in the flour, shaking off any excess.

  4. 4

    Heat Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.

  5. 5

    Fry the Steaks

Carefully add the coated steaks to the hot oil, cooking for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from skillet and place on a paper towel-lined plate.

Gravy Preparation

  1. 6

    Make the Roux

In the same skillet used for frying the steaks, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.

  2. 7

    Add Milk

Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and continue whisking until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 8

    Season the Gravy

Stir in salt and black pepper to taste. If the gravy is too thick, you can add a little more milk to reach your desired consistency.
