Dough

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Mix well until evenly combined.

  2. 2

    Incorporate Butter

Cut the unsalted butter into small pieces and add to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

    Add Egg and Water

Beat the large egg in a small bowl, then add it to the flour mixture along with the cold water. Mix until the dough just comes together. If it’s too dry, add a little more cold water.

  4. 4

    Chill the Dough

Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Filling Preparation

  1. 5

    Cook the Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and chopped bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 6

    Brown the Beef

Add the ground beef to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 7

    Season the Filling

Stir in the cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 8

    Roll Out the Dough

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Use a round cutter or a glass to cut out circles of dough, approximately 4-5 inches in diameter.

  2. 9

    Fill the Empanadas

Place a tablespoon of the beef filling in the center of each dough circle. Be careful not to overfill.

  3. 10

    Seal the Empanadas

Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together to seal, then crimp with a fork for added security.

  4. 11

    Prepare for Baking

Place the filled empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

  5. 12

    Bake

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the empanadas for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
