Cake Ingredients

Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the sugar mixture and continue to beat until light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and lemon zest, mixing until combined.

  5. 5

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 8

    Make the Frosting

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined.

  2. 9

    Add Cream and Vanilla

Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 10

    Color the Frosting (optional)

If desired, add food coloring to the frosting and mix until the desired color is achieved.

  4. 11

    Frost the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
