Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

In a large pot of boiling salted water, add the penne pasta. Cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Protein

If using shrimp, peel and devein them. If using chicken, cut it into bite-sized pieces.

  3. 3

    Chop the Vegetables

Dice the bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms into bite-sized pieces.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the mushrooms and continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add the Protein

Add the shrimp or chicken to the skillet. Season with salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Cook until the shrimp turns pink or the chicken is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 6

    Combine with Sauce

Pour the spicy marinara sauce into the skillet. Stir well to combine all ingredients and let simmer for about 5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Combine with Pasta

Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet with the sauce and protein. Toss everything together until the pasta is well coated with the sauce. Heat through for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Serving

  1. 8

    Plate the Dish

Serve the shrimp or chicken primavera in bowls. Optionally, sprinkle with additional crushed red pepper flakes for extra heat.
