Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 0.25-inch thick rings. Separate the rings from each other and place them in a bowl.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and any optional seasonings like paprika and garlic powder. Whisk together until well blended.

  3. 3

    Add Liquid

Gradually pour the beer (or sparkling water) into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick but pourable.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to check the temperature.

  2. 5

    Dredge the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off. Carefully place the battered onion rings into the hot oil.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Fry the onion rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
