Custard
Caramel
Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
- 2
Caramelize
Allow the mixture to cook without stirring until it turns a golden brown color, about 10-15 minutes. Be careful not to burn it.
- 3
Coat the Mold
Immediately pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
Custard Preparation
- 4
Blend the Custard Ingredients
In a blender, combine the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Blend until smooth.
- 5
Pour into Mold
Pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold.
- 6
Prepare for Baking
Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold (this is called a water bath).
- 7
Bake
Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 8
Cool and Refrigerate
Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Serving
- 9
Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to drizzle over the top.
- 10
Slice and Enjoy
Slice into wedges and enjoy your traditional Mexican flan!
