Method
Preparation Steps
- 1
Prepare the Corn Husks
Soak the corn husks in warm water for about 30 minutes until pliable. Drain and set aside.
- 2
Make the Masa Dough
In a large bowl, mix masa harina, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat the vegetable shortening until fluffy. Gradually add the masa mixture and chicken broth, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- 3
Assemble the Tamales
Take a soaked corn husk and spread about 2 tablespoons of masa dough onto the center. Add a tablespoon of shredded chicken and a spoonful of salsa on top. Fold the sides of the husk inward, then fold the bottom up to seal.
- 4
Cook the Tamales
Arrange the tamales upright in a steamer basket. Cover with a damp cloth and steam over boiling water for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the masa is firm and cooked through.
- 5
Serve
Remove tamales from the steamer and let them cool slightly. Serve with additional salsa on the side.
