Prepare pattern and fabric
Prewash and dry the fabric to pre-shrink. Press with an iron. Lay out the fabric flat on a cutting surface with the grainline aligned. Place the long-sleeve mini dress pattern pieces (front, back, sleeves, neckband/facing) on the fabric following nap/stretch direction—ensure stretch goes around the body (horizontal stretch). Pin or weigh pattern pieces in place and transfer markings (notches, darts, grainline) with chalk or a fabric marker.

Cut pieces
Cut the front and back body pieces, two sleeve pieces, and any neckband or facing pieces. If the pattern calls for interfacing (for a small neckline facing), fuse lightweight fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the facing pieces following manufacturer instructions. Keep pieces organized in pairs and mark left/right and front/back.

Shoulder seams
With right sides together, align front and back shoulder edges. Pin or clip, then stitch shoulder seams using a stretch stitch (narrow zigzag or stretch stitch) at 3-4 mm length. Alternatively, use a serger for a professional finish. Press seams toward the back and topstitch if desired for a flat finish.

Apply clear elastic
To stabilize the shoulder seam and prevent stretching, place a 1/4" wide clear elastic inside the shoulder seam along the seam allowance. Stretch the elastic slightly as you sew it to the seam allowance using a zigzag stitch to secure. Trim excess elastic. This step improves shape retention for a fitted mini dress.

Set in sleeves
With right sides together, match sleeve notches to the armhole and pin or clip in place. Ease the sleeve cap with small gathers if required by the pattern so it fits the armhole smoothly. Sew the sleeve into the armhole with a stretch stitch or serger. Repeat for the other sleeve. Press seam allowances toward the sleeve.

Side seams
With right sides together, fold the dress at the shoulder so side seams and sleeve underarms align. Pin the side seam from hem to sleeve cuff in one continuous seam. Sew with a stretch stitch or serger from the hem up through the underarm and down the sleeve seam to the cuff. Finish raw edges with a serger or zigzag. Press seams open or toward the back.

Neckline finish
If using a neckband: measure the neckline and cut the neckband to 85-90% of that measurement (shorter to create gentle stretch). Sew the short ends of the neckband together to create a loop. With right sides together, evenly distribute the neckband around the neckline, stretching slightly as you pin. Sew with a stretch stitch. Press seam allowance toward the body and topstitch lightly if desired. If using a facing: attach the facing to the neckline with right sides together, understitch the facing to the seam allowance, turn to the inside and press flat.

Sleeve hems and dress hem
For a narrow, professional hem on stretch fabric, press a small hem: turn the sleeve edge up 1/4" then again 3/8" and stitch with a twin needle or stretch stitch, or use narrow bias tape to finish. Repeat for the dress hem, turning up 1/2" to 3/4" depending on desired length and stitch with a twin needle for a clean double row of stitching. Trim any loose threads and press hems flat for a crisp edge.

Fit check and adjustments
Try the dress on or fit it to a dress form. Check shoulder placement, bust fit, sleeve length, and overall hem length. If adjustments are needed, mark with chalk, remove stitches with a seam ripper where necessary, and re-sew using the same seam allowances. Make small fit tweaks: take in side seams for a slimmer fit or let out slightly if possible.
