Method
Upper / Fabric Components
- 1
Prepare pattern pieces
Print and cut the kids' 70s shoe pattern in the target size. Transfer pattern outlines to the white cotton canvas (upper panels), retro striped polyester (accent panels), foam-backed knit (lining) and fusible interfacing. Mark stitch lines, fold lines and eyelet positions with tailor's chalk.
- 2
Fuse interfacing: Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of canvas upper panels following manufacturer's instructions, using a pressing cloth. This adds stability for sewing and eyelets.
- 3
Cut materials: Cut all upper pieces, lining pieces and accent panels precisely. Round edges and clip seam allowances where needed to allow smooth curves (clip but do not cut through).
- 4
Assemble accents: Place the retro striped accent panels on the canvas outer panels, aligning edges. Topstitch with nylon shoe thread using a 2.5–3 mm length straight stitch or narrow zigzag for stretch allowance. Backstitch at ends.
- 5
Attach toe cap and heel counter: Position the leatherette toe cap and heel counter pieces over the canvas areas. Glue them lightly with fabric glue, then edgestitch around using the sewing machine or hand stitch where machine cannot reach.
- 6
Sew lining to upper: With right sides together, sew the canvas upper to the foam-backed knit lining along the top opening and heel seam, leaving the toe area open. Trim seam allowances and grade seams if thick. Turn upper right-side out and press gently.

- 7
Reinforce eyelet area: Using an extra small interfacing patch on the lining, mark the 6 eyelet holes on each shoe equidistantly. Use the awl or leather punch to make pilot holes, then set metal eyelets with the eyelet setter according to package instructions.
- 8
Install laces and tongue: Construct the tongue from foam-backed knit and canvas layers. Sew the tongue to the upper at the base seam and topstitch if desired. Thread flat cotton laces through the eyelets and test fit.
- 9
Prepare insole: If the foam insole needs trimming, use the shoe last or upper to trace insole shape and cut to match. Glue the fabric-backed foam insole to the midsole recess lightly with fabric glue so it stays in place but remains removable.
- 10
Attach rubber toe bumper (optional): If using a rubber toe bumper strip, warm it slightly with a hairdryer, align along toe edge and glue with contact cement. Clamp until set and trim excess.
Sole & Midsole
- 11
Shape midsole: If using a pre-cut EVA midsole blank, sand the top surfaces lightly with 80–120 grit sandpaper to ensure flat, even contact. If needed, trim to match shoe outline using a sharp utility knife and the paper pattern as a guide.
- 12
Prepare outsole: Cut the rubber outsole sheet to match the EVA midsole profile. Use the paper pattern or trace the midsole to ensure accurate fit. Sand both bonding surfaces lightly to improve adhesion.
- 13
Glue midsole to upper: Apply a thin, even coat of contact cement to the bottom edge of the prepared upper (where it seats on the midsole) and to the top edge of the EVA midsole. Allow solvent flash time per adhesive instructions (usually 5–10 minutes) then press the upper onto the EVA midsole, aligning heel and toe. Use clamps or heavy binder clips to hold until tack is firm.
- 14
Bond outsole: Apply contact cement to the bottom of the EVA midsole and to the rubber outsole sheet. After flash time, press the outsole to the midsole, making sure the tread aligns properly. Use a roller or firm pressure to remove air pockets. Clamp and allow full cure time per adhesive label.
- 15
Finish sole edges: After adhesive cures, trim any excess rubber or EVA with a sharp knife. Sand the edges lightly for a smooth finish. If desired, apply a thin bead of hot-melt glue around the seam between upper and midsole for extra water resistance and to neaten the join.
Finishing & Quality Check
- 16
Final assembly check: Insert the trimmed removable foam insoles and confirm fit inside the shoe. Try lacing the shoe and inspect for even tension and comfortable tongue placement.
- 17
Clean and protect: Remove any glue smudges with a damp cloth before it fully cures. Lightly wipe and let shoes air dry. Optionally treat the leatherette and canvas with a child-safe protective spray suitable for fabric and faux leather to increase durability.
- 18
Safety & comfort test: Bend and flex the shoe to ensure no separation at glued seams. Press around the heel and toe to detect rough edges or hard spots; sand or pad as needed. Ensure eyelets are smooth inside to prevent irritation.
- 19
Repeat for second shoe: Follow the same steps in the same order to create the pair, taking care to mirror left and right pieces.
