Upper assembly

Prepare materials
Gather pre-cut synthetic leather upper panels, mesh tongue, non-woven lining, heel counter and padding foam. Confirm pieces correspond to left and right sizes and that edges are clean-cut.

Attach lining and padding
Using spray adhesive or stitch as preferred, bond non-woven lining to the inside of each upper panel. Place padding foam in collar and stick or sew the foam into the collar pocket. Ensure foam is smooth and symmetrical on both sides.

Insert heel counter
Slide the heel counter into the rear pocket of each upper (between lining and exterior). Center it so the stiff part sits behind the heel area. Secure with a few hand stitches at the top edge to keep it from shifting.

Sew decorative stripes and panels
Position the decorative stitched stripe pieces and any overlay panels on the exterior of each upper. Using the heavy-duty nylon thread and sewing machine, stitch around each overlay with a straight or topstitch to create the NY 90 look. Ensure mirrored placement on left and right.

Prepare tongue and label
Attach the mesh tongue to its lining piece. Fold and stitch the top of the tongue and secure the brand label patch to the tongue center. Add padding inside tongue by gluing or sewing foam to the underside.

Install eyelets
Mark and punch holes evenly on the vamp/quarter per shoe. Insert metal or plastic eyelets into each hole using the appropriate setter and hammer. Ensure eyelets are flush and secure.

Attach pull tab and insole
Sew the fabric heel pull tab to the top of the heel counter area on each shoe. Place the foam-backed insole into each upper to check fit and trim edges if needed so the insole lies flat inside the footbed.

Lace shoes
Thread the flat laces through the installed eyelets in a crisscross pattern. Tie a temporary knot to keep laces in place during lasting and sole attachment steps.

Prepare the last
Mount the shoe last (kids size) and slip each assembled upper onto the last, aligning the toe and heel. Use temporary tacks or lasting pliers/clamps to pull and secure the upper down around the last so it matches the shape of the sole. Smooth any wrinkles in the vamp and ensure the tongue sits centered.

Prep midsole and outsole
Lightly sand the bonding surfaces of the EVA midsole and rubber outsole with medium-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion. Wipe away dust with a clean cloth. If using contact cement activator, apply as manufacturer directs and allow to flash as recommended.

Apply sole adhesive
Apply an even coat of shoe sole adhesive to the bottom edge of the lasted upper (strobel or welt area) and to the top surface of the EVA midsole. Wait the recommended open time (per adhesive instructions) until tacky but not completely dry.

Attach midsole and outsole
Press the EVA midsole onto the lasted upper, aligning toe, heel and seams. Use clamps or weights and a rubber mallet to ensure full contact and remove air pockets. After midsole set, apply adhesive to midsole outsole contact area and align the rubber outsole, pressing firmly into place. Use clamps around the perimeter and let cure per adhesive instructions (commonly 12–24 hours) for full bond strength.

Trim and finish sole edges
After adhesive cures sufficiently to handle, remove shoes from the last. Use a utility knife or sole trimmer to trim any excess midsole or outsole material. Use sandpaper to smooth edges and a rubber mallet to seat the outsole edges for a clean finish.

Stitch any remaining topstitching around the sole perimeter if design calls for it. Check seams, eyelets, heel counter placement and insole fit. Ensure symmetry, consistent stitch length and that adhesives have no squeeze-out on visible areas. Clean any glue residue with an appropriate solvent and cloth.

Remove temporary knots and lace the shoes properly. Insert final foam insole if separate, place tissue paper inside to maintain shape, and box the pair. Confirm size labeling and attach any tags.
