Prepare uppers and lining

Place the pre-cut canvas upper panels and lining on a flat surface. Align the lining to the inner side of the upper panels, matching edges and stitch allowance. Use the sewing machine or hand stitch with heavy-duty needle to sew the lining to the upper along the top edge, leaving openings for eyelets and tongue area. Reinforce seams with reinforcement tape where the heel and toe will flex.

Attach heel counter and toe cap

Insert the heel counter into the back of each lined upper, ensuring it sits flush and centered. Glue the top edge of the heel counter to the lining with a thin bead of shoe glue and clamp until set (about 10–15 minutes). Fit the rubber toe cap to the front of the upper; apply adhesive to the inside rim of the cap and the corresponding outer toe area of the upper. Press firmly and clamp with clothespins, wipe excess glue, and allow to cure for 15–20 minutes.

Install eyelets or create lace openings

Mark eyelet positions evenly along the vamp using measuring tape and chalk. If using eyelets, punch holes with an awl and set the eyelets with the pliers. If using elastic lace without eyelets, create reinforced fabric openings by folding and stitching small tabs at marked positions and treating the edges with a dab of glue to prevent fraying.

Attach elastic laces

Thread the pre-cut elastic laces through the eyelets or openings. Adjust tension so the laces stretch to allow easy on/off but hold the foot snugly. Tie or secure the ends behind the tongue with a knot or a sewn-in stop, trimming excess.

Prepare insoles

Trim foam insoles to match the interior shape of the shoe last for the selected kids' size. Lightly sand the underside of each insole where glue will contact to improve adhesion. Apply a thin coat of adhesive to the insole and the footbed inside the shoe; press in place and clamp if needed. Allow to cure for 10–15 minutes.

Attach upper to outsole (lasting)

Stretch the assembled upper over the shoe last, aligning the centreline of toe and heel. Pull the upper down over the molded rubber outsole, ensuring even tension and that seams line up with the last. Apply adhesive around the top edge of the outsole and to the lower rim of the upper. Press the upper onto the outsole lip, working from toe to heel, folding and gluing neatly. Use clamps or clothespins around the outsole edge to hold while glue sets (20–30 minutes).

Finish edges and sole bonding

After initial set, run a bead of adhesive along the outsole seam for added waterproofing. Smooth the joint with a finger or small tool. Wipe any excess glue. If the outsole has a foxing tape or decorative rubber strip, press it into place now and clamp until cured.

Final assembly and quality check

Remove the shoe from the last once glue is tacky but secure (follow adhesive instructions for timing). Insert the trimmed foam insole firmly. Check flexibility at toe and heel; stitch or reinforce any loose areas. Apply fabric paint or markers to decorate (star motifs, stripes) and allow to dry. Optionally seal painted areas with a thin coat of clear sealant and let cure fully (24 hours before use).

Set up your workspace with the shoe last, tools, and materials. Keep clamps, adhesive applicator, and cloth nearby. Use scissors and sandpaper to trim and prep parts as described above. Use the awl and pliers when installing eyelets. Clean tools and wipe glue spills promptly with a damp cloth and solvent recommended by the adhesive manufacturer.
