Materials
Method
Cutting and Preparation
- 1
Pre-wash and prepare fabric
Pre-wash both the main and contrast knit fabrics in warm water and tumble dry to pre-shrink. Press flat with an iron on the appropriate setting for cotton knits.
- 2
Choose and prepare pattern
Prepare the pattern
- 3
Lay out and cut pieces
Fold the main fabric with right sides together. Pin the bodysuit pattern pieces (front, back, sleeve, neck binding, and crotch facing if included) to the fabric grain. For any contrasting cuffs or neckbands, place the contrast fabric. Use scissors or a rotary cutter to cut: 1 front, 1 back (on fold if pattern calls), 2 sleeves, 2 leg binding/crotch facing pieces, 1 neck binding. Transfer notches, grainlines, and markings with chalk or marker.
Construction — Body and Shoulders
- 4
Shoulder seams
With right sides together, align front and back at shoulder seams. Pin or clip and sew using a stretch stitch or narrow zigzag (approx. 3 mm stitch length, 1.5–2 mm width) or a serger, 1/4" (6 mm) seam allowance unless pattern specifies otherwise. Press seams toward the back, using a press cloth to protect the fabric.
- 5
Neck binding
Prepare the neck binding by folding the binding piece lengthwise with wrong sides together (or follow pattern instructions for a fold-and-stretch method). Open the shoulder seam slightly if needed and pin the binding to the neckline with right sides together, easing evenly. Stretch the binding slightly as you sew with a stretch stitch or with a serger, 1/4" seam allowance. Trim seam if bulky and press binding away from body.
Sleeves and Side Seams
- 6
Attach sleeves
With the bodysuit right side out, insert one sleeve (right sides together) matching shoulder and underarm notches. Pin and sew around the sleeve cap with a stretch stitch or serger using the same seam allowance. Repeat for second sleeve. Press seams.
- 7
Side and sleeve seams
Fold the bodysuit with right sides together, matching side seams and sleeve seams from hem to cuff. Pin and sew in one continuous seam from sleeve cuff to the leg opening using a stretch stitch or serger, 1/4" seam allowance. Trim and press seams open or toward the back as preferred.
Cuffs, Leg Openings, and Closures
- 8
Attach cuffs (if using contrast fabric)
Measure sleeve hem circumference and cut cuff pieces from contrast fabric to be 70–80% of the sleeve hem length (for a snug knit cuff) and the height specified by pattern (typically 1–1.5" finished). Fold cuff wrong sides together and match raw edges to sleeve hem, stretching slightly as you sew. Use a stretch stitch or serger and press.
- 9
Finish leg openings and add elastic
If pattern uses leg binding: attach leg binding/crotch facing pieces to leg openings with right sides together, stretching slightly as you sew. If using elastic: measure leg opening circumference and cut 1/4" knit elastic to match, slightly stretched (about 95% of finished circumference). Baste the elastic to the seam allowance, then fold seam allowance over and topstitch with a stretch stitch to encase the elastic. Alternatively, sew the leg binding and then edgestitch to finish.
- 10
Install snaps at crotch
Mark the snap placement along the crotch closure according to the pattern (usually 3 snaps spaced evenly). Reinforce each snap area with a small scrap interfacing or a second layer of fabric behind the placement if desired. Open and install snaps using the snap pliers or setting tool following manufacturer instructions. Test snaps for secure hold.
Finishing
- 11
Topstitch and check fit
Topstitch around the neckline, sleeve hems and leg openings if desired for a professional finish, using a twin needle (if available) or a narrow zigzag to allow stretch. Trim loose threads and use seam sealant sparingly at snap thread areas if using metal snaps.
- 12
Final pressing and quality check
Press the finished bodysuit gently, avoiding flattening ribbed knits. Check all seams and closures, verify fit against the pattern size, and make any minor adjustments.
