Method
Cook the Pasta

Boil Water
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil over high heat. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water.

Cook Penne
Once the water is boiling, add the 2 cups of penne pasta. Stir occasionally and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes.

Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse.
Prepare the Sauce

Heat Olive Oil
In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Allow it to heat for about 1 minute.

Sauté Garlic
Add 2 minced garlic cloves to the skillet and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the can of crushed tomatoes, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of dried basil, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir well to combine.

Simmer Sauce
Allow the sauce to simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained penne pasta to the sauce in the skillet. Toss until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce.

Add Parmesan
Sprinkle 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese over the pasta and mix well until the cheese is melted and integrated.
Serve the Dish

Serve the penne pasta hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves to taste.
