Preparation

  1. 1

    Chop Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Brown the Meat

In a large skillet over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once hot, add the ground beef and pork sausage. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  2. 3

    Sauté Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, carrot, celery, and garlic to the skillet with the meat. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are soft and the onion is translucent.

  3. 4

    Add Wine

Pour in the red wine and let it simmer for about 3 minutes, scraping the bottom of the skillet to deglaze and incorporate any browned bits.

  4. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Broth

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Mix well to combine all ingredients.

  5. 6

    Season the Sauce

Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Stir to incorporate.

  6. 7

    Simmer

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your liking.
