Topping (optional)
Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente (about 8-10 minutes). Drain and set aside.
Making the Cheese Sauce
- 2
Prepare the Roux
In the same pot, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly until it forms a paste.
- 3
Add Milk
Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- 4
Incorporate Cheeses
Remove the pot from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and grated parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.
- 5
Season the Sauce
Add salt, black pepper, mustard powder, and paprika to the cheese sauce. Stir well to combine.
Combining Pasta and Sauce
- 6
Mix Pasta and Cheese Sauce
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is fully coated.
Optional Topping
- 7
Prepare Breadcrumb Topping
In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter until evenly coated.
- 8
Top and Bake
Spread the macaroni and cheese into a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
