Method

Meatball Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Meatball Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.

  2. 2

    Form Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 3

    Bake Meatballs

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and browned.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 6

    Combine with Meatballs

Once the meatballs are cooked, add them to the marinara sauce and let simmer for an additional 5 minutes to meld the flavors.

Sandwich Assembly

  1. 7

    Prepare the Rolls

Slice the sub rolls in half and lightly toast them if preferred.

  2. 8

    Assemble the Sandwiches

Place a few meatballs on the bottom half of each roll, spoon marinara sauce over the meatballs, and top with slices of provolone cheese. Sprinkle grated Romano cheese on top.

  3. 9

    Melt the Cheese

If desired, place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  4. 10

    Serve

Close the sandwiches with the top half of the rolls and serve immediately, enjoying your classic meatball sandwich!
