Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Soak the Beans

In a large bowl, add the dried navy beans and cover them with water. Let them soak overnight or at least 8 hours.

  2. 2

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).

  3. 3

    Cook the Bacon

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove from heat and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.

  4. 4

    Sauté the Onion

In the same skillet with the bacon drippings, add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Cooking

  1. 5

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the soaked and drained beans, sautéed onions, cooked bacon, molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, and water. Mix well.

  2. 6

    Transfer to Baking Dish

Transfer the mixture to a large baking dish or Dutch oven, spreading it out evenly.

  3. 7

    Bake

Cover the baking dish with a lid or aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 2.5 to 3 hours, checking occasionally to ensure there is enough liquid. If the beans become too dry, add a bit more water.

  4. 8

    Final Touch

After 2.5 to 3 hours, remove the lid or foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes to allow the top to brown.
