Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot, over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in the flour. Whisk continuously for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, making sure to smooth out any lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese and Seasoning

Remove the pot from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining and Baking

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is well coated.

  2. 9

    Prepare Topping

If using, combine 0.5 cups of breadcrumbs, 0.25 cups of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter in a small bowl.

  3. 10

    Transfer to Baking Dish

Pour the mac and cheese mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. If using, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top.

  4. 11

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Serving

  1. 12

    Cool and Serve

Remove the mac and cheese from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes before serving.
