Method

Cooking the Beans

  1. 1

    Prepare the Beans

Rinse the pinto beans under cold water to remove any dirt or impurities. Place the rinsed beans in a large pot.

  2. 2

    Add Water

Pour 4 cups of water into the pot with the beans. Ensure the beans are fully submerged.

  3. 3

    Boil and Simmer

Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beans are tender.

Flavoring and Mashing

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

While the beans are cooking, dice the onion and mince the garlic. In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.

  2. 5

    Combine Ingredients

Once the beans are tender, drain them (reserving some cooking liquid) and add them to the skillet with the sautéed onions and garlic. Stir in the cumin and salt.

  3. 6

    Mash the Beans

Using a potato masher or fork, mash the beans to your desired consistency. If the mixture is too thick, add reserved cooking liquid a little at a time until you reach your preferred texture.

Serving

  1. 7

    Plate the Refried Beans

Transfer the refried beans to a serving dish. Optionally, top with shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, and chopped jalapeños for added flavor.

  2. 8

    Enjoy

Serve warm as a side dish or as a filling for tacos, burritos, or nachos.
