Method
Cooking Pasta
- 1
Boil Water
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil over high heat.
- 2
Cook Penne
Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually around 10-12 minutes.
- 3
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside, reserving a small cup of pasta water for later use.
Preparing Sauce
- 4
Heat Olive Oil
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- 5
Sauté Garlic
Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- 6
Add Chili Flakes
Stir in the red chili flakes and sauté for an additional 30 seconds.
- 7
Add Tomatoes
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir well. Let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 8
Season Sauce
Season with salt and black pepper to taste. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.
- 9
Add Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
Combining
- 10
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained penne pasta to the sauce, tossing gently to coat the pasta evenly.
- 11
Serve
Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and additional basil if desired.
