Method

Biscuits

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cut in Butter

Add the unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

    Add Buttermilk

Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Shape Biscuits

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 30 seconds. Pat into a rectangle about 1-inch thick and cut out biscuits with a biscuit cutter or a glass.

  6. 6

    Bake

Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Gravy

  1. 7

    Cook Sausage

In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the ground sausage until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 8

    Make Roux

Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir to combine. Cook for about 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

  3. 9

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 10

    Season the Gravy

Add salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and garlic powder to the gravy. Stir well to combine and adjust seasoning to taste.

  5. 11

    Serve

Serve the hot sausage gravy over the freshly baked biscuits.
