Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  2. 2

    Activate Yeast

In a separate bowl, combine warm water and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, pour in the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Let Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare Taro Filling

In a medium bowl, combine the mashed taro, sugar, coconut milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until smooth.

Bun Assembly and Cooking

  1. 7

    Shape the Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions. Flatten each portion and place about 1 tablespoon of taro filling in the center. Pinch the edges to seal and shape into a cat face.

  2. 8

    Prepare for Steaming

Place the shaped buns on parchment paper squares and let them rest for another 30 minutes.

  3. 9

    Steam the Buns

Fill a steamer pot with water and bring to a boil. Place the buns in the steamer basket, cover, and steam for 15-20 minutes until fluffy.

  4. 10

    Serve

Once done, carefully remove the buns from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.
