Dough Preparation
- 1
Mix the dry ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Mix well to ensure even distribution.
- 2
- 3
Form the dough
Gradually add the lukewarm liquid mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- 4
First rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Filling Preparation
- 5
Prepare the filling
In a bowl, mix the mashed red beans, sugar, coconut milk, and vanilla extract until well combined. Adjust the sweetness as desired.
- 6
Chill the filling
Cover the filling mixture and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to allow it to firm up slightly.
Shaping and Cooking
- 7
Shape the buns
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and place about 1 tablespoon of filling in the center. Gather the edges and pinch to seal, shaping it into a ball.
- 8
Second rise
Place the shaped buns on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, cover with a towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- 9
Steam the buns
Prepare a steamer and steam the buns for about 15-20 minutes until they are fluffy and cooked through.
Decoration
- 10
Decorate the buns
Once the buns are steamed, allow them to cool slightly. Mix a few drops of pink food coloring with water and brush the mixture over the buns. Use black sesame seeds to create the eyes and nostrils.
