Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Marinade

In a large bowl, combine olive oil, soy sauce, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, smoked paprika, and brown sugar. Whisk until ingredients are well blended.

  2. 2

    Marinate the Tri-tip

Place the tri-tip roast in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the meat, ensuring it's fully coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight for best flavor.

Grilling

  1. 3

    Preheat the Grill

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, around 400°F (200°C).

  2. 4

    Grill the Tri-tip

Remove the tri-tip from the marinade and let it sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature. Place the tri-tip on the grill and sear for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until a nice crust forms.

  3. 5

    Cook to Desired Doneness

Reduce the heat to medium and continue grilling for approximately 20-30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 130°F (54°C) for medium-rare, 140°F (60°C) for medium, or 150°F (65°C) for medium-well.

  4. 6

    Rest the Meat

Once cooked, remove the tri-tip from the grill and let it rest for at least 10-15 minutes before slicing to allow the juices to redistribute.

Optional Sides

  1. 7

    Prepare Corn on the Cob

While the tri-tip rests, you can grill corn on the cob. Husk the corn and soak it in water for 15 minutes. Then, place it on the grill and cook for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally until tender and slightly charred.

  2. 8

    Serve with Coleslaw

Serve the tri-tip sliced against the grain with coleslaw on the side for a refreshing crunch.
