Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the tomatoes

Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into 1/4-inch thick slices. Sprinkle with salt and let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out excess moisture.

  2. 2

    Set up the breading station

In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, add the buttermilk. In a third bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 3

    Bread the tomatoes

Dredge each tomato slice in the flour, then dip it in the buttermilk, and finally coat it in the cornmeal mixture. Make sure each slice is well coated.

  4. 4

    Fry the tomatoes

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded tomato slices in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

  5. 5

    Drain and serve

Once fried, remove the tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Sprinkle with additional salt if desired. Top with crumbled bacon before serving.
