Method

Prepare the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mix the Beef

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands to gently mix until just combined. Be careful not to overwork the meat.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Divide the mixture into two equal portions (for two half-pound patties). Shape each portion into a round patty about 3/4 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center to prevent puffing during cooking.

Cook the Burger

  1. 3

    Preheat the Grill or Skillet

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat or a skillet over medium-high heat on the stove.

  2. 4

    Cook the Patty

Place the burger patty on the grill or skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side without pressing down, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness. If adding cheese, place a slice on top of the patty during the last minute of cooking.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 5

    Prepare the Bun

While the patty is cooking, slice the burger bun in half and toast it lightly on the grill or in a toaster if desired.

  2. 6

    Add Toppings

Start with the bottom half of the bun, add the cooked burger patty, then layer on your choice of toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, onion slices, pickles, and any condiments like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. Finally, cap it with the top half of the bun.
