Base Ingredients

Method

Base Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Cheese Sauce

In the same pot, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until lightly golden, creating a roux.

  3. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring continuously until the mixture is smooth and thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Cheeses

Lower the heat and add the American cheese and cheddar jack cheese, stirring until completely melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  5. 5

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring until the pasta is thoroughly coated.

Baking

  1. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. 7

    Add Toppings

Sprinkle your choice of toppings evenly over the mac and cheese. Options include bread crumbs, crumbled bacon, green onions, sautéed mushrooms, diced tomatoes, jalapeños, or shredded parmesan cheese.

  3. 8

    Bake

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
