Method

Preparation of Caramel

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of water. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture turns a golden amber color. Carefully pour the caramel into a round baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.

Preparation of Custard

  1. 2

    Prepare the Custard Mixture

In a medium saucepan, heat 2 cups of milk over medium heat until hot but not boiling. In a separate bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Gradually whisk in the hot milk until well combined.

Baking

  1. 3

    Bake the Crème Caramel

Pour the custard mixture over the set caramel in the baking dish. Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the outer pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the baking dish. Bake in a preheated oven at 325°F (160°C) for about 50-60 minutes or until the custard is set.

Cooling and Serving

  1. 4

    Cool and Serve

Remove the baking dish from the water bath and let it cool at room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the dish, invert onto a plate, and enjoy the luscious crème caramel.
