Method

Preparing the Cake

  1. 1

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined and smooth.

  5. 5

    Pour Batter

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.

  6. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Frosting

  1. 8

    Melt Chocolate

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the dark chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth. Let it cool slightly.

  2. 9

    Cream Butter

In a large mixing bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy.

  3. 10

    Add Sugar

Gradually add the powdered sugar to the butter, mixing on low speed until combined.

  4. 11

    Incorporate Cream and Vanilla

Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract, mixing until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

  5. 12

    Add Chocolate

Carefully fold in the melted chocolate until fully incorporated and the frosting is a rich brown color.

Assembling the Cake

  1. 13

    Frost the First Layer

Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top.

  2. 14

    Add Second Layer

Place the second cake layer on top of the frosted layer.

  3. 15

    Frost the Top and Sides

Spread frosting over the top and sides of the cake, smoothing it out with a spatula.

  4. 16

    Decorate

Optional: Decorate the cake with chocolate shavings or fresh berries, if desired.

  5. 17

    Serve

Slice the cake and serve to your guests, enjoying the rich flavors of the Crossroads Reserve.
