Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Filling

In a food processor, pulse the walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until finely chopped. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Layer the Phyllo Dough

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.

  3. 3

    Add the Nut Mixture

Spread half of the walnut mixture evenly over the phyllo layers. Continue layering with another 4 sheets of phyllo, again brushing each with butter. Add the remaining walnut mixture and top with another 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.

  4. 4

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.

  5. 5

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine water, honey, and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.

  6. 6

    Soak the Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the honey syrup over it. Allow it to soak for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
