In a large bowl, separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Place the yolks in one bowl and the whites in another.

Add granulated sugar to the egg yolks and whisk together until the mixture is pale and creamy.

Whip Cream
In another bowl, whip the heavy cream until it forms soft peaks. Carefully fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture.
Coffee Mixture

Prepare Coffee
Brew the espresso or strong coffee and let it cool slightly. If using, mix in the coffee liqueur.
Assembly

Dip Ladyfingers
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they are soaked but not soggy.

Layer the Tiramisu
In a rectangular dish, layer half of the soaked ladyfingers on the bottom. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.

Add another layer of soaked ladyfingers and top with the remaining mascarpone mixture.
Chilling and Serving

Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight to set.

Before serving, dust the top generously with cocoa powder and garnish with dark chocolate shavings if desired.
