1. Marinate the Chicken

In a large bowl, mix the yogurt, garlic, ginger, garam masala, cumin seeds, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, coating them well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.

2. Prepare the Rice

Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

3. Cook the Chicken

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Add the marinated chicken and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through.

4. Combine Rice and Chicken

Add the soaked rice to the pot with the cooked chicken. Pour in 4 cups of water and add salt to taste. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 20 minutes or until the rice is tender and has absorbed the water.

5. Serve

Fluff the rice with a fork, garnish with chopped cilantro, and serve hot.
