Dough

For Cooking

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine corn masa harina and salt. Gradually add water, mixing with your hands until a soft dough forms. The dough should be moist but not sticky.

  2. 2

    Divide the Dough

Divide the dough into 10 equal balls, cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying out.

Filling Preparation

  1. 3

    Prepare the Filling

In a medium bowl, combine the cooked black beans, crumbled queso fresco, finely chopped onion, chopped cilantro, chili powder, and garlic powder. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Assembly and Cooking

  1. 4

    Fill the Dough

Take one ball of dough and press it flat between two pieces of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten it into a circle about 6 inches in diameter.

  2. 5

    Add the Filling

Place about 2 tablespoons of the filling in the center of the dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape, sealing the edges by pressing them together firmly.

  3. 6

    Cook the Tetela

In a skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the tetelas, cooking for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Sprinkle with salt to taste.

  4. 7

    Serve

Remove the tetelas from the skillet and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite salsa or guacamole.
