Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

In a fine mesh strainer, rinse the long-grain white rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice

In a medium bowl, combine the rinsed rice and 4 cups of water. Add the cinnamon stick. Let the mixture soak for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.

Blending

  1. 3

    Blend the Mixture

After soaking, remove the cinnamon stick. In a blender, combine the soaked rice and water mixture, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Blend on high speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Straining

  1. 4

    Strain the Horchata

Using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the blended mixture into a large bowl or pitcher. Press down with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.

Serving

  1. 5

    Serve and Garnish

Pour the horchata into glasses over ice. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon on top for garnish. Serve chilled and enjoy!
