Dough

Optional Toppings

Method

Prepare the Dough

  1. 1

    Mix the Dough Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine masa harina, warm water, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it is smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Prepare the Shrimp Filling

  1. 3

    Cook the Shrimp

In a skillet over medium heat, add a small amount of oil and sauté the minced garlic and chopped onion until translucent. Add the shrimp, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Cook until shrimp are opaque, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Prepare the Beef Filling

  1. 4

    Cook the Beef

In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef along with the minced garlic and chopped onion. Add cilantro, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Cook until beef is fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Assemble and Cook the Pupusas

  1. 5

    Form the Pupusas

Take a portion of the dough (about the size of a golf ball) and flatten it into a disc. Place a spoonful of your desired filling (shrimp or beef) in the center. Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and pinch to seal. Flatten gently to form a thick disc.

  2. 6

    Cook the Pupusas

Heat a non-stick skillet or comal over medium heat. Cook each pupusa for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and slightly crispy. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

Serve the Pupusas

  1. 7

    Add Toppings

Serve the pupusas warm with optional toppings like pico de gallo, sour cream, and hot sauce on the side.
