Cake Preparation
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- 3
Combine Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, mix the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- 4
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
- 5
Add Chocolate Chips
Fold in the chocolate chips gently into the batter.
- 6
Bake the Cake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 7
Cool the Cakes
Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting Preparation
- 8
Prepare Frosting Ingredients
Ensure that the cream cheese and unsalted butter are at room temperature for easy mixing.
- 9
Mix Cream Cheese and Butter
In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
- 10
Incorporate Sugar and Vanilla
Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined and creamy.
Assemble the Cake
- 11
Layer the Cake
Place one layer of the cooled red velvet cake on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of cream cheese frosting on top.
- 12
Add Second Layer
Top with the second layer of cake and frost the top and sides with the remaining cream cheese frosting.
- 13
Decorate and Serve
Optionally, decorate the cake with additional chocolate chips on top or around the edges before serving.
