Method

Patty Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Patty Mixture

In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Form the mixture into a large patty, about 1 inch thick.

Grilled Onions

  1. 3

    Heat the Skillet

In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 4

    Sauté the Onions

Add minced onion and sauté until soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.

Cooking the Patty

  1. 5

    Cook the Patty

In the same skillet, add the patty over medium-high heat. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until browned.

  2. 6

    Finish Cooking the Patty

Flip the patty and top with American cheese. Continue cooking for another 3-4 minutes until the cheese melts and the patty is cooked through.

Assemble the Sandwich

  1. 7

    Prepare Texas Toast

Spread butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.

  2. 8

    Toast the Bread

In a clean skillet, toast the bread butter side down until golden brown.

  3. 9

    Layer the Ingredients

On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer the grilled onions, the cooked patty with melted cheese, pickles, yellow mustard, and chili.

  4. 10

    Complete the Sandwich

Top with the other slice of Texas toast, buttered side up, and press down gently.

Final Cooking

  1. 11

    Grill the Sandwich

Return the sandwich to the skillet and grill on medium heat for 2-3 minutes on each side, until the bread is crispy and golden.
