Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Sushi Rice
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice and water in a pot, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for another 10 minutes.
- 2
Season the Rice
In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Pour this mixture over the cooked rice and gently fold it in. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
- 3
Prepare the Filling
Slice the raw salmon fillet into thin strips. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and slice it into thin strips as well.
- 4
Assemble the Roll
Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Lay one nori sheet shiny side down on the mat. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge. Arrange the salmon and avocado strips in a line across the center of the rice.
- 5
Roll the Sushi
Using the bamboo mat, lift the edge closest to you and start rolling away from you, pressing gently but firmly to form a tight roll. Roll all the way to the edge of the nori, wetting it slightly to seal the roll.
- 6
Slice the Roll
Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the knife with a damp cloth between cuts for cleaner slices.
- 7
Serve
Serve the sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
