Root Beer Ingredients

Method

Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Create the Root Beer Base

In a large pot, combine sassafras root, sarsaparilla root, wintergreen leaves, and 8 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Strain the Mixture

After simmering, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the solids. You should have a flavorful liquid.

  3. 3

    Add Sugar and Yeast

Stir in 2 cups of sugar until fully dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool down to room temperature. Once cooled, sprinkle 1 tsp of yeast over the surface and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

  4. 4

    Ferment the Root Beer

Cover the pot with a clean cloth and let it sit at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours. This will allow the yeast to carbonate the root beer.

  5. 5

    Bottling

Once fermented, carefully pour the root beer into bottles, leaving some space at the top. Add 1 tsp of vanilla extract to each bottle.

  6. 6

    Add Carbonated Water

Top off each bottle with carbonated water to your desired fizziness and seal tightly.

  7. 7

    Chill and Serve

Refrigerate the bottles for at least 4 hours before serving. Enjoy your homemade root beer!
