Method

Making the Pita Bread

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture along with olive oil.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Mix until a dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

  5. 5

    Shape the Pitas

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and roll it out into a flat circle about 1/4 inch thick.

  6. 6

    Cook the Pitas

Preheat an oven to 475°F (245°C) or a skillet over medium heat. Place the rolled-out pita bread on a baking sheet or skillet and bake/cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until they puff up and have light golden spots.

  7. 7

    Keep Warm

Remove the pitas from the oven or skillet and wrap them in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm.

Serving Suggestions

  1. 8

    Drizzle with Olive Oil

Once the pitas are warm, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with dried oregano and salt to taste.

  2. 9

    Slice and Serve

Slice the pita bread into wedges and serve warm with your favorite dips or spreads.
