Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Water

In a large pot, fill with water and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook the Pasta

Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, reserve a cup of pasta water and drain the rest. Set aside.

Making the Sauce

  1. 4

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a large skillet over medium heat, add 3 tablespoons of olive oil and let it heat up.

  2. 5

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, making sure not to burn it.

  3. 6

    Add Red Pepper Flakes

Stir in the crushed red pepper flakes and cook for an additional 30 seconds.

  4. 7

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper. Stir well.

  5. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked penne pasta to the sauce, tossing to combine. If the sauce is too thick, add a bit of the reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.

  7. 10

    Add Fresh Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil and toss again.

Serving

  1. 11

    Plate the Dish

Serve the arrabbiata pasta hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese.
